Whether you are driving to driving to Brisbane from Mt Isa, Alice Springs, Charleville, or any other nearby destination it’s very likely you will be passing through Roma too.
Roma is probably the largest settlement in the Maranoa region, and certainly has plenty to see if you have an interest in historic buildings and the oil, livestock and agricultural industries. The Roma Central Motel is an ideal place to stay while passing through. For business travellers and stockmen in town for work, the Roma Central Motel is also a great place to stay.
Roma Queensland
This area of Maranoa is well-known for being the place where gas was first found in Australia. While still an important resource for the region, Roma is as well known for the Roma Stockyards and the surrounding agriculture. However Roma also provides visitors with an opportunity to explore the wider Maranoa region. The towns of Injune, Mitchell, Surat, Yuleba and Wallumbilla offer a range of experiences unique to the area. Most of them hold some historical significance, with Surat and Yuleba playing key roles in the Cobb and Co routes of yesteryear.
Mitchell is close to the Mt Moffat National Park, a haven for nature lovers with an abundance of wildlife and over 250 bird species living in the area. Mitchell is also well known for the Great Artesian Spa, the aquatic centre has warm mineral pools that are excellent for relaxing tired muscles and easing tension.
Head north to Injune, a township surrounded by several of Queensland’s National Parks – Nuga Nuga, Carnarvon, Lonesome and Beilbaat; a fascinating treat with tropical flora, fauna, including rare indigenous palms and also home to some interesting rock formations adorned with ancient Aboriginal rock art.
